BMW key procedures have changed five times in twenty years — and the right procedure for your car depends entirely on which immobiliser system it has. This explainer walks through what's actually involved, so you understand what you're paying for.
BMW has used five different immobiliser platforms in the last twenty years. The procedure for your car depends entirely on which one is fitted. We identify yours before any work begins.
The earliest electronic immobiliser systems. Found in E-series BMWs — E60 5-Series, E90 3-Series, E70 X5 and similar. Programming is via OBD; relatively quick. Most spare keys done in 60-75 minutes. All-keys-lost completed via the CAS module directly.
Transitional generation found in late E-series and early F-series cars. More complex than CAS3 but still well within independent capability. We have the tooling for CAS4/CAS4+ and do them regularly.
F-series BMWs use the FEM (Front Electronic Module) or BDC (Body Domain Controller) for vehicle access. Different procedure to CAS — typically requires bench-access work or specific OBD sequences. Still independent-serviceable, just more work.
The current BMW immobiliser, fitted to G-series BMWs (G20 3-Series, G30 5-Series, G05 X5 etc.). Significantly more complex with stronger cryptographic protection. We're one of the independents with full BDC2 capability.
These are genuinely different jobs at meaningfully different price points. Knowing which you need helps you understand any quote you receive.
You have at least one working key, and you want a backup. Simplest BMW key job. We use your existing key as a reference to authorise the new key. All your existing keys keep working. Typically 60-75 minutes.
No working key available. Significantly more involved — we have to access the immobiliser module directly to extract cryptographic credentials. The new key is programmed from scratch, and any previously-programmed keys are disabled for security. Typically 90-150 minutes.
You have multiple keys, one is lost or broken, and you want to maintain your existing key count. Treated as a spare key job (we add the new one) with optional disabling of the lost/broken one for security. We discuss with you when booking.
BMW key jobs follow a clear procedure. Complexity varies by immobiliser type, but the structure of the work is consistent.
We confirm which immobiliser is fitted (often from registration, always verified on connection). This determines tooling and procedure. 5 minutes.
Connect via OBD or bench (depending on platform), read the current immobiliser state. This confirms key count, ISN (Individual Serial Number), and immobiliser status.
OEM or aftermarket fob, pre-cut to your blade pattern. We bring the right fob — no waiting for parts.
Programme the new fob to the immobiliser, pair it to the ISN, register in the vehicle's security table. Sync keyless entry where fitted.
Engine starts, doors lock/unlock, remote buttons work, keyless approach (if fitted) detects the key. All verified before we leave.
For all-keys-lost jobs, any previously-programmed keys are disabled.
BMW dealers regularly quote four-figure sums for key work that we can do for a fraction. It's not that dealers are dishonest — they have different cost structures. Here's what drives the gap.
Main dealer workshops charge high hourly rates. An independent mobile specialist runs a fundamentally lower-cost operation — no showroom, no service advisors, no franchise overheads. The work is the same; the labour cost isn't.
Dealers must fit OEM fobs by policy. Independents can offer OEM or aftermarket — and aftermarket fobs are mechanically and electronically identical at a fraction of the cost.
For all-keys-lost, the dealer typically requires recovery to the workshop. That's an additional considerable charge on top of the key work itself. We come to you — no recovery, no extra charge.
Main dealers often quote 1-3 weeks for key appointments. That's a real cost when you're relying on the car. We typically book same-day or next-day for spare keys, faster for emergencies.
BMW key programming covers a wider range than people often realise. We work on a few specific variants where most independents won't.
BMW Comfort Access uses LF/RF radio for proximity detection. Programming requires Comfort Access-capable fobs and the right tooling. We handle this on every CAS4-onwards BMW that's factory-fitted with it.
BMW motorcycles (K-series, R-series, S-series modern) have their own immobiliser systems separate from cars. We programme these too — one of the few mobile specialists that does.
Some M-series fobs carry distinct part numbers (e.g. red-stitch leather inserts). Functionally identical to standard fobs, just visually distinct. We can supply either.
BMW key work is precise — wrong tooling or wrong procedure can lock you out of the immobiliser permanently. We've been doing BMW key work since 2006 and cover every immobiliser generation from CAS1 to BDC2. The right kit, the right procedure, the right warranty.
