Corrupt FRM symptoms
we see most.

The FRM (footwell module) is a known weak point on most BMW E-series cars. A brief drop in voltage — from a flat battery, a jump-start gone wrong, or a battery change — can corrupt its memory and disable a whole list of functions at once. The good news: in most cases the module does not need replacing, just repairing. Here are the most common symptoms we see.

01 / Windows

Windows not working.

One or all of your windows stop working — usually after a battery change, jump-start or flat battery. The motors are fine, the switches are fine — the FRM has lost its memory of how to control them. Classic FRM corruption fault.

Most common
02 / Indicators

Indicators & hazards failed.

Indicators stop working, or hazard lights stay on, or both come on randomly. Often paired with the window fault above. Both are controlled by the FRM, so when the module corrupts, both go at once.

Pairs with window fault
03 / Lights

Exterior lights
misbehaving.

Headlights, tail lights, fog lights or interior lights either fail or come on at the wrong times. Sometimes coupled with adaptive headlight (AHL) error messages on the dash. All controlled by the FRM.

All bulb circuits
04 / Central locking

Central locking erratic.

The car will not lock, will not unlock, locks itself randomly, or only some doors respond. All routed through the FRM — when the module loses its configuration, central locking is one of the first things to misbehave.

Lock control
05 / Warning lights

Warning lights stuck on.

Dashboard warnings that will not clear after a battery change, despite no obvious physical fault. Often the brake warning, ABS, or general fault lights. The FRM thinks something is wrong because its own memory is corrupt.

Phantom warnings
06 / Trade work

Garages & BMW specialists.

BMW specialists and indie garages welcome — FRM repair is one of the most common requests we get from trade. We work alongside many indie BMW workshops who do not handle FRM repair in-house. Trade rates for repeat work.

Read first.
Repair, not replace.

Replacing the FRM with a new module is expensive and unnecessary in most cases. The right approach is to read the corrupted memory, repair or restore the data, then put it back in service. The whole job is done on your driveway — we do not need to take the car anywhere.

  1. 01

    Confirm FRM is the cause

First step is to verify the symptoms are actually FRM-related. Sometimes what looks like an FRM fault is actually a separate issue (BCM, fuse, switch failure). We diagnose first, then quote the repair — no work without a confirmed root cause.

  2. 02

    Read & repair the FRM

Using specialist programming tools we read the current state of the FRM, identify what data is corrupted, and either repair the existing data or restore from a clean reference. The module never leaves the car for most jobs.

  3. 03

    Verify all functions

Windows up and down on all four doors, indicators left and right, hazards, headlights, fog lights, interior lights, central locking, fault codes cleared. Everything tested before we pack up.

Symptoms we fix
  • Windows not working
  • Indicators & hazards failed
  • Lights misbehaving
  • Central locking erratic

Repair, not
replace.

A new FRM from BMW costs £400–£700 plus dealer coding, plus a recovery truck to get the car there, plus the wait. FRM repair on your driveway is significantly cheaper, takes 90–180 minutes on site, and your existing module stays in the car.

E90 windows and indicators all died after a battery change. BMW dealer quoted £750 for a new FRM. DashTech repaired the existing module on my driveway for a fraction. Everything works.

X5 wouldn't lock and the lights were going haywire. Indie BMW garage said FRM. DashTech came out, repaired it without removing the module from the car. Saved a fortune vs dealer.

E60 had every classic FRM symptom going after the battery died on holiday. DashTech booked me in next day, repaired the FRM in under 2 hours. All working perfectly.

BMW FRM repair, explained.

What is the BMW FRM and why does it fail?
The FRM (Fussraummodul, or Footwell Module) is a control module fitted to most BMW E-series cars from approximately 2007 to 2014. It controls window operation, indicators, exterior lights, central locking and several body electronics. The FRM3 in particular has a known weakness — a brief drop in battery voltage during jump-starting, battery replacement, or even a flat battery can corrupt its internal memory and disable many functions of the car.
What are the symptoms of a corrupt FRM module?
Common symptoms include: windows stop working (often all four at once), indicators stop working, exterior lights stop working or work incorrectly, the car will not lock or unlock, dashboard warning lights appear that will not clear, the car will not start, or central locking becomes erratic. The fault often appears immediately after jump-starting, fitting a new battery, or recovering from a flat battery.
Can the FRM be repaired or does it need replacing?
In most cases the FRM can be repaired — the module itself rarely fails physically. What is usually needed is reading and rewriting the corrupted memory data. We do this on-site using specialist programming tools. A repair is significantly cheaper than buying a new module from BMW which can run £400 to £700 plus dealer coding fees.
Which BMW models can have FRM problems?
BMW E-series cars from approximately 2007 to 2014 — this includes E60 and E61 5-Series, E70 and E71 X5/X6, E81, E82, E87, E88 1-Series, E83 X3, E84 X1, E90, E91, E92 and E93 3-Series, plus the Mini R55, R56, R57 variants. Both FRM2 and FRM3 modules can be affected, though the FRM3 is most known for this fault.
How long does FRM repair take?
Most FRM repairs are completed in 90 to 180 minutes on site. The job involves carefully accessing the module, reading its current state, repairing or restoring the corrupted data, and verifying all affected functions are working again before we leave.
How much does BMW FRM repair cost?
Significantly less than module replacement. A new FRM from BMW with dealer coding typically runs £400 to £700 plus a recovery fee to get the car to them. Repair on your driveway is usually a fraction of that. We give you a fixed price upfront when you send your registration via WhatsApp or the quote form.
