Corrupt FRM symptoms
we see most.

The FRM (footwell module) is a known weak point on most BMW E-series cars. A brief drop in voltage — from a flat battery, a jump-start gone wrong, or a battery change — can corrupt its memory and disable a whole list of functions at once. The good news: in most cases the module does not need replacing, just repairing. Here are the most common symptoms we see — or run through the full footwell module symptoms checklist. If it all started with jump leads, read lights dead after a jump start.

01 / Windows

Windows not working.

One or all of your windows stop working — usually after a battery change, jump-start or flat battery. The motors are fine, the switches are fine — the FRM has lost its memory of how to control them. Classic FRM corruption fault.

Most common
02 / Indicators

Indicators & hazards failed.

Indicators stop working, or hazard lights stay on, or both come on randomly. Often paired with the window fault above. Both are controlled by the FRM, so when the module corrupts, both go at once.

Pairs with window fault
03 / Lights

Exterior lights
misbehaving.

Headlights, tail lights, fog lights or interior lights either fail or come on at the wrong times. Sometimes coupled with adaptive headlight (AHL) error messages on the dash. All controlled by the FRM.

All bulb circuits
04 / Central locking

Central locking erratic.

The car will not lock, will not unlock, locks itself randomly, or only some doors respond. All routed through the FRM — when the module loses its configuration, central locking is one of the first things to misbehave.

Lock control
05 / Warning lights

Warning lights stuck on.

Dashboard warnings that will not clear after a battery change, despite no obvious physical fault. Often the brake warning, ABS, or general fault lights. The FRM thinks something is wrong because its own memory is corrupt.

Phantom warnings
06 / Trade work

Garages & BMW specialists.

BMW specialists and indie garages welcome — FRM repair is one of the most common requests we get from trade. We work alongside many indie BMW workshops who do not handle FRM repair in-house. Trade rates for repeat work.

Read first.
Repair, not replace.

Replacing the FRM with a new module is expensive and unnecessary in most cases. The right approach is to read the corrupted memory, repair or restore the data, then put it back in service. The whole job is done on your driveway — we do not need to take the car anywhere.

  1. 01

    Confirm FRM is the cause

First step is to verify the symptoms are actually FRM-related. Sometimes what looks like an FRM fault is actually a separate issue (BCM, fuse, switch failure). We diagnose first, then quote the repair — no work without a confirmed root cause.

  2. 02

    Read & repair the FRM

Using specialist programming tools we read the current state of the FRM, identify what data is corrupted, and either repair the existing data or restore from a clean reference. The module never leaves the car for most jobs.

  3. 03

    Verify all functions

Windows up and down on all four doors, indicators left and right, hazards, headlights, fog lights, interior lights, central locking, fault codes cleared. Everything tested before we pack up.

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

Repair, not
replace.

A new FRM from BMW means dealer prices, coding fees and a recovery truck. Postal repair firms mean stripping the module out yourself and waiting on couriers, twice. We come to you, repair the original module at your door in about an hour, and test everything before we leave. No posting. No stripping the car. No downtime.

Ford in the household too? We also repair Ford instrument clusters — Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Transit and more — the same mobile, at-your-door way.

The jump-start special. A 1 Series or 3 Series gets jump-started, and instantly the windows, indicators and lights are all dead at once. The FRM's memory has corrupted — we rebuild it at the car and every function comes back before we leave.

The one-sided MINI. An R56 with lights out on one side, or windows that stopped after a battery change. Same module, same fix — repaired at your door, original coding kept, no posting the module anywhere.

The used-module trap. A second-hand FRM off eBay that will not work — used FRMs carry the donor car's coding and often will not programme. We repair your original module instead, so nothing needs coding at a dealer.

BMW FRM repair, explained.

What is the BMW FRM and why does it fail?
The FRM (Fussraummodul, or footwell module) is a body-control module fitted to BMW 1 Series (E81–E88), 3 Series (E90–E93), X1 (E84), Z4 (E89), X5/X6 (E70–E72) and MINI R55–R61, roughly 2005 to 2014. It controls the windows, indicators, exterior lights, mirrors and central locking. Its known weakness: a dip or spike in battery voltage — a jump start, a flat battery, a battery change or charging on the car — can corrupt the module's internal memory and knock out a whole list of functions in one go.
My BMW's lights and windows died after a jump start — is that the FRM?
Almost certainly, yes. This is the classic FRM failure: the car is jump-started or recovers from a flat battery, and immediately the windows, indicators and some or all exterior lights stop working, often with warning lights that will not clear. The hardware is usually fine — the module's memory has corrupted. We rebuild that data at your door and everything comes back.
What are the symptoms of a corrupt FRM module?
Windows stop working (often all at once), indicators and hazards fail, exterior lights fail or stick on, central locking misbehaves, dashboard warnings will not clear, and in some cases the module stops communicating with diagnostics entirely. Symptoms usually appear straight after a jump start, battery change or flat battery.
Can the FRM be repaired or does it need replacing?
In most cases it can be repaired — the module rarely fails physically. We read the corrupted memory, rebuild the data and put the original module back into service, keeping your car's original coding, so there are no dealer programming fees afterwards. We cover every FRM variant — FRM, FRM2, FRM3 and FRM3R — and all part numbers. If a module is genuinely beyond repair, we tell you before any work is done.
Which BMW and MINI models are covered?
All FRM-equipped BMWs and MINIs: 1 Series E81, E82, E87, E88; 3 Series E90, E91, E92, E93; X1 E84; Z4 E89; X5 E70; X6 E71 and E72; and MINI R55, R56, R57, R58, R59, R60 and R61. The E60/E61 5 Series, E63 6 Series and E83 X3 use a different light module rather than an FRM — we repair those too on the same visit basis.
How long does FRM repair take?
About an hour on site for most jobs. We come to your home, workplace or the roadside, repair the module at the car, then test everything — windows, indicators, lights, central locking — before we leave. No posting your module away and waiting days without a car.
How much does BMW FRM repair cost?
It depends on where you are and which module your car has, so call or WhatsApp us with your registration and postcode and we will give you a fixed price upfront before we travel. It is a fraction of a new module from BMW once dealer coding and recovery are added — and you keep your original module and coding. Full breakdown: what FRM repair really costs.
