ECU programming, explained.

What's the difference between cloning, coding, and adapting?
Cloning reads the data from your original ECU (where readable) and writes it to a donor unit — the new one becomes a copy of the old. Coding programmes a fresh, blank ECU to your VIN, immobiliser and options. Adapting takes a used ECU from another car and reconfigures it to work with yours. We pick the right approach based on what you've got.
My ECU is dead — can it be repaired or do I need a new one?
Often, yes. ECUs that "need replacing" frequently have repairable faults — water damage, capacitor failure, internal short circuits, processor issues. We diagnose first and tell you honestly whether repair makes sense. Many cases we save people 70–80% versus a dealer replacement.
Can you programme a used ECU from a breaker yard?
Yes — used ECU adaptation is one of our core services. We virginise where needed, programme the immobiliser data, code to your VIN, and marry it to your keys. The cheapest route to a working ECU on most cars, often a fraction of the cost of new.
How long does ECU programming take?
Most jobs are completed in 60–180 minutes on the driveway. Cloning is usually quickest; full adaptation of a used unit can take longer if multiple modules need syncing. We'll always tell you up front before booking.
Do you cover my make?
BMW, Audi, VW Group, Mercedes, Porsche, Mini, Land Rover, Jaguar, Ford, Vauxhall and most Japanese, Korean and French marques are routine for us. Send the registration over and we'll confirm before booking.
Will the work void my warranty?
If your car's still in manufacturer warranty, dealer ECU work is the safer route. For everything outside warranty — which is most of our customers — independent ECU programming is fully legitimate and increasingly common as cars age out of dealer plans.
