A mobile auto locksmith is what the high street called a "key cutter" thirty years ago — but a modern one is closer to a dealer's key department on wheels, doing complex programming work on driveways and roadside. This explainer walks through what we actually do, how we do it, and what makes a good one.
A modern mobile auto locksmith does everything from cutting a basic mechanical key to programming the most complex smart-key system on the road. The job covers a wide range — here's the realistic picture.
Cutting blade-style keys from a manufacturer's key code or by impression. Most modern cars still have a mechanical blade for emergency use — we cut these on-site using key-cutting machines that fit in the van.
Programming an additional key fob to an existing immobiliser. Works for every major brand from 1995 onwards. Typically 60-90 minutes on the driveway.
Programming a key when you have no working key. Significantly more involved — requires reading the immobiliser module directly. Done on the driveway, often same-day.
Getting into a locked car without breaking anything. Mechanical techniques (door pick, lock decoder) used to access the car non-destructively. Then we either programme a new key or — if you have one — restart your existing key.
When the fob is mechanically broken (cracked case, broken buttons, snapped blade) but electronics still work — we repair the case, transfer the chip, get you back to a working fob without a full new programming.
We don't do home/office locksmithing — that's a different trade. We don't do anything illegal (no helping with stolen cars, no clone-and-go work without ownership verification). We're honest about scope.
A serious mobile auto locksmith carries tens of thousands of pounds worth of kit. Here's what makes the work possible.
Different brands need different tools. We carry kit for BMW, Mercedes, JLR, Audi/VW, Porsche, Volvo, Ford and most others. Premium tools cost thousands each; we have multiple for the brands we work on most.
Manufacturer-spec key cutting from electronic key codes or by code-based reproduction. Cuts blades for HU101 (Ford/JLR), HU92 (BMW), HU64 (Mercedes), HU66 (VW group) and most others. A several-thousand-pound kit.
OEM and aftermarket fobs for the most common 50+ models — pre-stocked so we don't have to wait days for parts. Adds up to a small fortune in inventory.
Door picks, lock decoders, pry bars (for non-destructive entry). Cars are designed not to be opened without keys, so this kit is precision-engineered and brand-specific.
Multi-brand dealer-grade diagnostic tool (Autel, Launch, OEM scanners) for reading vehicle data, identifying immobiliser systems, and verifying work post-programming.
12V bench supply (in case the car battery is flat), soldering kit (for fob repairs), specialist screwdrivers (T8, T10, hex bits for fob disassembly), workspace mat for bench work on the bonnet or boot.
A typical mobile auto locksmith call follows a clear sequence. Here's what to expect from the moment you call.
You call or WhatsApp with your registration and a description of the problem. We ask 2-3 questions: car make/model/year, exactly what's wrong, where the car is now. Usually takes 2-3 minutes.
We confirm a fixed price (no "from £X" or "depending on...") and a booking slot. The price you're quoted is the price you pay. We don't pad jobs once on-site.
We arrive at the agreed time at the agreed location. ID and ownership verification (V5C and photo ID) checked before any programming. The van parks on the driveway or roadside; we work either in the van or on the bonnet/boot.
Programming takes 60-180 minutes depending on the job. You can stay, leave, run errands — most customers prefer to stay for the verification at the end. Coffee usually offered.
Engine starts, all functions tested (locks, remote buttons, keyless approach), any lost keys disabled (for AKL). You watch the new key working before any payment.
Card payment via portable terminal, or bank transfer. We don't take cash from new customers — payment record matters for the warranty.
Mobile auto locksmiths range from excellent professionals to people with no business holding the title. Here's how to tell the difference.
Real Google reviews from real customers (not paid review-mill content), an established business presence, years of trading, named individuals you can ask for. Be wary of "locksmiths" with only a phone number and no online history.
A good locksmith gives you a fixed price before they travel, sticks to it on the day, and doesn't add "extras" once on-site. "From £X" pricing or "depending on what we find" is a warning sign.
Ownership verification (V5C + photo ID) is standard locksmith practice. Locksmiths who don't check are either careless or facilitating theft. Walk away from anyone who doesn't ask.
A good locksmith tells you when a job is outside their capability — Mercedes FBS4, post-2024 some marques, certain motorsport variants. Walking away from a job they can't do is a sign of professionalism.
Written warranty on the fob and the work, with a real address and contact details. "Warranty" on a phone number with no fixed business is worth nothing.
Won't do AdBlue delete, won't do EGR delete (illegal MOT-wise), won't do anything that suggests you're evading something. Good locksmiths stay within the law because the law exists for a reason.
A general mobile auto locksmith covers most car key work. For a few specific jobs, you want a deeper specialist.
McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani and similar require specialist tools that general locksmiths don't carry. We work on the more mainstream supercars (Aston Martin, Bentley, Porsche) but for the most exclusive marques, the dealer's specialist may be the only option.
For 5+ vehicles in one operation, fleet specialists offer better pricing, scheduled visits and account management. We offer this within our service area; some others specialise exclusively in fleets.
When the job is part-key, part-ECU (e.g. cloned ECU plus key matching), a locksmith who only does keys won't do the whole job. We offer both — but it's worth asking up front.
Body shops and salvage rebuilders sometimes have specific account terms (30-day invoicing, scheduled depot visits, trade rates). Most general locksmiths don't offer this; trade-focused specialists do. We have a dedicated trade offering — see our trade pages.
Mobile auto locksmithing has become a real technical trade in the last decade — dealer-grade equipment, manufacturer-spec procedures, full immobiliser integration. We're among the established names in the South-East with two decades of experience and a track record that holds up.
