Why Volvo injector
coding matters.

Modern Volvo diesels measure cylinder balance constantly through the crankshaft position sensor. If the ECU doesn't know each injector's true flow rate, it can't compensate properly — and you get the symptoms most drivers describe after an injector swap: rough idle, vibration, occasional smoke, and a check-engine light a few drives later. Coding is what fixes it.

    Read the existing codes off the ECU

    First job is to read what's currently programmed into your Volvo's ECU. Tells us whether the previous coding was done at all, whether it was done correctly, and what the right values should now be.

    Programme each cylinder's code individually

    Each injector has its own unique flow-rate code stamped on the body. We programme each cylinder's code into the right position in the ECU — no copy-paste, no generic values. Cylinder one's code goes to cylinder one, and so on.

What is Volvo injector coding and why does my car need it?
Each diesel injector has a unique flow-rate code printed on the body. Volvo's ECU — EDC16, EDC17 or SID807 depending on model and year — needs that code programmed in so it knows the exact fuel delivery from each cylinder. Without correct coding, you'll get rough idle, black smoke, uneven running, and often a check-engine light. Coding fixes it.

What happens if I just fit new injectors without coding them?
The engine will likely run, but not properly. The ECU will be using the old injector flow values, so you'll get uneven cylinder balance, rough idle, possibly smoke, sometimes a check-engine light a few drives later. Coding takes minutes but makes a significant difference to how the engine runs.
