The failure that defines this niche
The 2004–2011 Focus and its C-Max and Kuga Mk1 siblings use a Visteon cluster whose board fails with age: dry solder joints and tired components on the power and CAN stages. It often announces itself with flickering or a brief total blackout that recovers after a restart — then one morning the dash stays dark, the immobiliser light flashes and the car is going nowhere. Because the cluster carries the immobiliser handshake, a dead cluster is usually a dead car (P1260 theft detected, U1900 CAN fault).
Mk2 / Mk2.5 symptoms
- Cluster flickers or blacks out, recovers after restart (early stage)
- All gauges drop to zero on the move; engine may cut out
- Cluster completely dead — no start, immobiliser light flashing
- Mileage area shows dashes; displays corrupt
- Fault codes U1900, U0155, P1260 'theft detected — vehicle immobilised'
- Speedo or fuel gauge dead while the rest works
Same-day at your address — and the car keeps its identity
Postal repairers ask you to remove the cluster from a car that won't start and wait most of a week. We drive to it — home, work, supermarket car park — repair the original board in the van and prove the car starts, drives and reads correctly before leaving. Mileage, keys and PATS pairing untouched; nothing to program.
- Call or message with your postcode and symptoms. Dead dash, flashing immobiliser light, gauges at zero, dashes for mileage — tell us what the car is doing and what it is (Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Transit, Galaxy, S-Max, Mondeo).
- We come to the car. Home, work or wherever it refused to start. The van carries the test gear, components and tools for these Visteon clusters.
- Diagnose first, at the car. We confirm the cluster is actually the fault before any repair — if it's the battery, wiring or another module, you get told straight.
- Board-level repair on site. The cluster comes out, the failed stage is rebuilt on the bench in the van, and it goes straight back into your car.
- Started, tested, driven. Gauges, mileage, warning lights and immobiliser all proven working before we leave — same day.
C-Max in Esher — sat for three weeks, then wouldn't start
A multi-car household's spare C-Max came off its driveway rest with a dead dash and flashing immobiliser light. Cluster repaired on the drive the same day; the owners never even moved the other cars out of the way.
