The Ford fault that strands the whole car

From the late 1990s to the late 2010s, Ford's mainstream models shared instrument clusters built by Visteon — one electronic family spanning the Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo Mk4, Galaxy and S-Max, Transit Mk7 and Transit Connect. They share the same weakness: with age and heat, the cluster's board develops dry joints and component failures. The dash flickers, gauges sweep to zero, the mileage shows dashes — and because the immobiliser handshake runs through the cluster, the day usually ends with a car that will not start.

That last part is why a postal repair service is the wrong shape for this fault: the car can't be driven anywhere, so you're left removing your own dashboard electronics and waiting on couriers. We built the service the fault actually needs — the repair comes to the car.

Symptoms we see every week

  • Instrument cluster completely dead — no gauges, no lights, no display
  • Car won't start; immobiliser light flashing (fault codes P1260, U1900, U0155)
  • All needles drop to zero while driving, sometimes with the engine cutting out
  • Mileage display showing dashes (----) instead of the odometer reading
  • Dash flickering or flashing on and off before dying (classic Transit Mk7)
  • Speedometer or fuel gauge stopped working, others fine
  • Centre display faded, corrupted or blank (Focus Mk3 era and Convers+ units)
  • Backlight failure — cluster works but unreadable at night

Any of these on a 1998–2018 Ford points first at the cluster. The symptoms guide walks through each one, and the part number guide shows how to confirm which Visteon unit you have.

How a visit works

  1. Call or message with your postcode and symptoms. Dead dash, flashing immobiliser light, gauges at zero, dashes for mileage — tell us what the car is doing and what it is (Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Transit, Galaxy, S-Max, Mondeo).
  2. We come to the car. Home, work or wherever it refused to start. The van carries the test gear, components and tools for these Visteon clusters.
  3. Diagnose first, at the car. We confirm the cluster is actually the fault before any repair — if it's the battery, wiring or another module, you get told straight.
  4. Board-level repair on site. The cluster comes out, the failed stage is rebuilt on the bench in the van, and it goes straight back into your car.
  5. Started, tested, driven. Gauges, mileage, warning lights and immobiliser all proven working before we leave — same day.

Focus Mk2 in Woking — wouldn't start after the weekly shop

Owner came back to a dead dash and a flashing immobiliser light in a supermarket car park. We met her at the car that afternoon, confirmed the cluster fault, repaired the board in the van and had the engine running within the visit — no recovery truck, no lost mileage, straight home for tea.

One cluster family, one specialist

Because these Fords share their cluster architecture, we see the same handful of failures again and again — and carry the right components, connectors and test rigs in the van to fix them at the first visit. It's the same strictly-mobile model behind our BMW & Mini footwell module service: rated 5.0 from 752 Google reviews.

Ford cluster repair — common questions

Why has my Ford's instrument cluster failed?
Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, Galaxy, S-Max and Transit models of roughly 1998–2018 use Visteon instrument clusters with well-documented board-level weaknesses. With age, heat cycles and vibration, solder joints and components on the power and CAN stages fail — causing flickering, dead gauges, display faults and no-starts. It's an age fault, not something you did.
The car won't start at all — can it really be fixed at home?
Yes, and that's the whole point of our service. On these Fords the immobiliser handshake involves the cluster, so a dead cluster commonly immobilises the car. Postal repair means removing the cluster yourself and a week off the road; we repair it at the car, same day, and it never has to be recovered anywhere.
Will I lose my mileage or need the keys reprogrammed?
No. We repair your original cluster rather than swapping it, so the factory mileage, key coding and immobiliser pairing stay exactly as they are. Nothing needs programming afterwards.
Which models do you cover?
All the shared-cluster Fords: Focus Mk1, Mk2/Mk2.5 and Mk3, C-Max Mk1 and Mk2, Kuga Mk1 and Mk2, Mondeo Mk4, Galaxy and S-Max (including Convers+ displays), Transit Mk7 and Transit Connect. If you're unsure which you have, just tell us the year and model when you call.
What does it cost?
Call with your postcode, model and symptoms and we'll give you a clear picture for your exact job before we set off. It's consistently far less than a dealer replacement cluster once you count the programming a replacement needs.
Do you cover my area?
We're based in Leatherhead, Surrey and cover London, Surrey and the wider South East as a strictly mobile service — see the local pages below or call with your postcode.
