1 Series footwell module repair,
the classic case.

No BMW suffers the footwell module fault more often than the 1 Series. Huge numbers on the road, many now on their second or third owner with an original-spec battery — so flat batteries and jump starts are constant, and every one is a chance for the FRM to corrupt. Windows, lights, indicators and locking all dead at once? We rebuild the module at your door in about an hour, original coding kept. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

What E8x owners
call us about.

The same module fails the same way across the whole E8x family — hatch, coupé or convertible. These are the patterns.

01 / Jump start

The jump start
that killed everything.

The 1 Series speciality: a flat battery, jump leads on, engine running — and windows, indicators and lights all dead at once. The voltage dip corrupted the FRM's memory mid-write. Fully recoverable.

Most common
02 / Windows

All windows dead,
one-touch gone.

Every window quits together, usually straight after a battery event. Motors and switches fine — the module lost its configuration. Rebuilt at the car.

After battery events
03 / Lights

Corona rings & lights
misbehaving.

Sidelights or corona rings out one side, dipped beam gone, or lights stuck on. The FRM drives each circuit individually — one-side failures with good bulbs point straight at it.

Often one side
04 / Locking

Central locking
gone random.

Won't lock, won't unlock, or locks itself — arriving together with the light and window faults. Same module, same corruption event.

Same root cause
05 / Old batteries

The real culprit:
tired batteries.

The 1 Series isn't badly designed — it's numerous and ageing. Original batteries limping into their second decade go flat, get jumped, and take the FRM with them. Worth replacing a weak battery once the module is repaired.

Honest cause
06 / Used modules

Second-hand FRM
will not code.

Used E87 FRMs carry the donor car's coding and usually refuse to programme. Repairing your original is cheaper and cleaner — nothing to code afterwards.

Avoid the trap

At your door,
about an hour.

Home, work or roadside — the 1 Series job is the one we do most, and it follows the same three steps every time.

  1. 01

    Confirm it is the FRM

We verify the symptoms point at the module, not a fuse, switch or the battery itself — no work without a confirmed root cause.

  2. 02

    Read & rebuild the module

Whether yours is the early FRM/FRM2 or the later FRM3, we read its state and rebuild the corrupted data on the original board — coding intact, nothing to programme at a dealer.

  3. 03

    Test everything before we leave

All windows, indicators, hazards, every light circuit, central locking, codes cleared. Done when it all works.

Which module is in yours?
  • Early E87s: FRM / FRM2
  • Facelift & later: FRM3
  • E81/E82/E88: mostly FRM3
  • Send the reg — we confirm in minutes
  • All variants & part numbers covered
→ E81, E82, E87, E88 — all covered

Every E8x
1 Series.

Hatch, coupé or convertible, petrol or diesel, 116i to 135i — same module family, same at-your-door repair.

E87 5-door (2004–2011)
E81 3-door (2007–2011)
E82 Coupé (2007–2013)
E88 Convertible (2008–2013)

Later F20/F21 1 Series (2011 on) use a different architecture — if that's yours, call us and we'll point you right. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

Mobile · At your door
The 1 Series job:
about an hour.

A dealer would sell you a new module plus programming. We rebuild your E8x's original FRM at your door in about an hour — no part to buy, no coding fees, no recovery truck, everything tested before we leave.

The winter special. First frost, tired battery, jump leads — and the whole body-electronics set dies at once. FRM rebuilt on the driveway, everything back before the kettle's boiled twice.

The detour. An eBay FRM that wouldn't code, then the call to us. Original module repaired at the door — where the job should have started.

The convertible complication. Windows and locking misbehaving on a cab is more than annoying — it's security. Same-day visit, module rebuilt, roof routine back to normal.

1 Series footwell module, explained.

Does my BMW 1 Series have a footwell module?
Yes — every E8x 1 Series (E87 5-door, E81 3-door, E82 Coupé, E88 Convertible, roughly 2004–2013) carries an FRM. Early cars run the FRM/FRM2, later and facelift cars the FRM3. Your registration tells us exactly which, before we arrive.
Why do 1 Series footwell modules fail so often?
Honestly? Not because the 1 Series is worse-built — because there are so many of them, they are getting old, and ageing batteries mean flat batteries, jump starts and battery swaps. Every one of those voltage events is a chance for the FRM's memory to corrupt. It is the most common FRM call-out we get.
My 1 Series died after a jump start — what now?
Do not keep power-cycling it and do not buy a module. The jump corrupted the FRM's stored data; the hardware is almost certainly fine. We rebuild the data at your door in about an hour and everything comes back. See our dead-after-a-jump-start guide for the full story.
Which FRM variant does my car have — and does it matter to you?
Early E87s carry the FRM or FRM2; facelift cars and the E81/E82/E88 mostly carry the FRM3. It does not change anything for you — we repair every variant and part number — but send the reg and we will confirm yours in minutes.
Should I replace the battery too?
If a weak battery caused the flat that caused the jump that corrupted the module — then yes, it is worth sorting, or the sequence repeats. We can advise on the state of yours at the visit.
How long does 1 Series FRM repair take?
About an hour at your door for most jobs — home, workplace or roadside — with every window, light, indicator and the locking tested before we leave.
What does it cost?
One fixed price quoted upfront from your reg and postcode — a fraction of a new module plus dealer coding. See the FRM repair cost page for the honest comparison.
