Footwell module symptoms,
the full checklist.

Not sure whether your BMW or MINI's problem is the footwell module? Run down this checklist. If two or more symptoms match — especially straight after a jump start, flat battery or battery change — it is almost certainly the FRM. And the fix is not a new module: we repair the original at your door, usually in about an hour. See the BMW FRM repair and MINI FRM repair pages for the fix itself.

The six symptoms
that give it away.

The FRM controls windows, indicators, exterior lights, mirrors and central locking — so when it corrupts, faults arrive in clusters, not one at a time. Count how many of these you have.

01 / Windows

Windows dead —
often all at once.

All four windows (or both on a MINI) stop responding together, and one-touch operation is gone. Motors and switches fine. A single window alone is more likely a regulator or switch — a cluster of them is the FRM.

Symptom 1
02 / Indicators

Indicators & hazards
not working.

No indicators either side, or hazards that will not come on — usually arriving together with the window fault. Relays are not the culprit; both circuits live in the FRM.

Symptom 2
03 / Lights

Lights out —
often one side.

Dipped beam or tail lights dead on one side with good bulbs, lights stuck on, or adaptive headlight errors. The FRM drives each lighting circuit individually — one-side failures are its signature.

Symptom 3
04 / Locking

Central locking
erratic.

The car will not lock or unlock properly, locks itself randomly, or only some doors respond. Routed through the FRM; misbehaviour here alongside light or window faults completes the picture.

Symptom 4
05 / Warnings

Dashboard warnings
that will not clear.

Bulb-failure and general fault warnings that survive every restart and code-clear, with nothing physically wrong. The module is reporting its own corrupted state.

Symptom 5
06 / No comms

Module gone
from diagnostics.

The severe end: the FRM drops off the bus entirely and diagnostics cannot see it. Still usually recoverable — the data is rebuilt at board level on the original module.

Symptom 6

Is it definitely
the FRM?

Three questions separate a corrupt footwell module from the faults that mimic it.

  1. 01

    What happened just before?

A jump start, flat battery, new battery or charger session immediately before the faults appeared is the FRM's smoking gun. Multiple systems failing at the same moment is data corruption, not coincidence.

  2. 02

    Could it be something simpler?

One window alone: likely a regulator or switch. One bulb out: check the bulb first. No-crank after a knock: possibly the battery safety terminal. We check the simple stuff first so you never pay for a repair the car did not need.

  3. 03

    What does diagnostics say?

A corrupt FRM shows as implausible stored faults across lighting and windows — or as a module missing from the bus entirely. We scan before we quote, and repair only on a confirmed root cause.

The jump-start special. A 1 Series or 3 Series gets jump-started, and instantly the windows, indicators and lights are all dead at once. The FRM's memory has corrupted — we rebuild it at the car and every function comes back before we leave.

The one-sided MINI. An R56 with lights out on one side, or windows that stopped after a battery change. Same module, same fix — repaired at your door, original coding kept.

FRM symptoms, explained.

What are the main symptoms of a failed footwell module?
The big five: windows stop working (often all at once), indicators and hazards fail, exterior lights fail or stick on (frequently one side only), central locking misbehaves, and dashboard warnings appear that will not clear. In more severe cases the module stops communicating with diagnostics entirely. Two or more of these together — especially right after a jump start, flat battery or battery change — is almost certainly the FRM.
Can I drive with a faulty footwell module?
The engine usually runs fine, but driving without working indicators, brake lights or headlights is unsafe and can be illegal, and a car that will not lock is a security risk. Treat it as a fix-promptly fault: avoid driving at night or in poor visibility until it is repaired, and get it looked at as soon as you can — the repair itself takes about an hour at your door.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the footwell module?
No — and it can make things worse. FRM corruption is stored data damage, not a temporary glitch, so power-cycling does not fix it and each additional voltage event risks deeper corruption. The data has to be read and rebuilt with proper tools.
Will the fault clear itself over time?
No. Once the module's memory is corrupted it stays corrupted. The good news is that the hardware is usually fine, so a data rebuild on the original module — keeping your car's coding — restores everything without replacement.
Only one side of my lights is out — is that really the FRM?
If the bulbs are good, very probably. The FRM drives each lighting circuit individually and shuts circuits down when it detects a short, so a one-side failure with healthy bulbs is a signature FRM symptom on both BMWs and MINIs.
Which cars get these symptoms?
FRM-equipped BMWs — 1 Series E81–E88, 3 Series E90–E93, X1 E84, Z4 E89, X5 E70, X6 E71/E72 — and MINI R55–R61, roughly 2005 to 2014. The E60/E61 5 Series and E63 6 Series use a different light module with similar symptoms; we repair those too.
What does the fix cost?
Repairing the original module at your door costs a fraction of a new module plus dealer coding. Call or WhatsApp with your registration and postcode and we will give you a fixed price upfront.
