Lights dead after a jump start?
It's the FRM — and it's fixable.

You jump-started the car — or changed the battery, or put it on charge — and the engine runs fine, but now the windows, indicators and some of the lights are dead, and the dash is full of warnings. Don't panic, and don't buy a module. The voltage dip corrupted your footwell module's (FRM's) memory — a known weakness on BMW 1 & 3 Series, X1, Z4, X5, X6 and MINI R55–R61. All windows
stopped at once.

Every window dead from the moment the engine restarted, one-touch gone. That simultaneous failure is data corruption — four window motors do not break at the same second.

    Don't keep power-cycling

    Disconnecting the battery, pulling fuses or trying another jump will not clear corrupted data — and every extra voltage event risks deepening the damage. Leave it be.

    Don't buy a module — yet

    A new FRM from BMW is dealer money plus programming. A used one off eBay carries the donor car's coding and often will not programme at all. In most cases your original module is recoverable for a fraction of either.

After a jump start, explained.

Why did a jump start kill my BMW's lights and windows?
During a jump start (or a flat-battery recovery, battery change or charger session) the system voltage dips and spikes. The footwell module (FRM) — which controls your lights, windows, indicators and locking — is writing to its internal memory at exactly the wrong moment, and that memory corrupts. The result: several systems dead at once, the moment the engine is running again.
Is the damage permanent?
Usually not. In the great majority of cases the module's hardware is fine — it is the stored data that has scrambled. We read the module, rebuild the corrupted data and put your original FRM back in service with its coding intact. Everything the fault took out comes back.
Should I disconnect the battery or try another jump to reset it?
No. Corruption is not a temporary glitch — power-cycling will not clear it, and every additional voltage event risks making the data harder to recover. Leave the battery alone and get the module read properly.
Should I buy a replacement FRM instead?
Be careful — this is the classic trap. A new module from BMW is expensive and needs dealer programming; a used module off eBay carries the donor car's coding and often will not programme to yours at all. Repairing your original module is cheaper than both and needs no coding afterwards.
Can a dealer fix it?
A dealer will typically quote a new module plus programming, plus getting the car to them with faulty lights. It works, but it is the most expensive route to the same outcome. We repair the module you already have, at your door, in about an hour.
How do I avoid this next time I jump start the car?
Use clean, correct connections (engine off, correct terminals and earthing point, leads in the right order), avoid wiggling or re-clamping leads mid-start, and prefer a proper smart charger for flat batteries over repeated jump attempts. No method is completely risk-free on these cars — the FRM's vulnerability is a design weakness — but tidy technique reduces the odds.
