MINI FRM symptoms
we see most.

R55–R61 MINIs inherited the BMW FRM3 — and its famous weakness. A voltage dip from a jump start, flat battery or battery change corrupts the module's memory and takes out a whole list of functions at once. The module rarely needs replacing. Here is what MINI owners call us about most — or check the full symptoms checklist.

01 / Lights

Lights out
on one side.

Dipped beam or tail light dead on one side with perfectly good bulbs — the most recognisable MINI FRM fault. The module drives each lighting circuit individually, so one side drops while the other carries on.

Classic MINI symptom
02 / Windows

Windows stopped
working.

One or both windows dead, one-touch function lost — usually straight after a battery change, jump start or flat battery. Motors and switches are fine; the FRM has lost its configuration.

After battery events
03 / Indicators

Indicators &
hazards failed.

Indicators stop working or hazards behave strangely, often together with the window fault. Both run through the FRM, so both go down together when the module corrupts.

Pairs with windows
04 / Jump start

Everything died
at once.

The car was jump-started or recovered from a flat battery, and instantly lights, windows and indicators all quit. That is the FRM's memory corrupting mid-voltage-dip — the textbook failure.

The classic cause
05 / No comms

FRM not
responding.

Diagnostics cannot see the footwell module at all and codes will not clear. Usually still recoverable — we read and rebuild the module at board level rather than replacing it.

Still repairable
06 / Used modules

Second-hand FRM
will not code.

A used FRM off eBay carries the donor car's coding and often will not programme to yours. We repair your original module instead — original coding kept, nothing to programme.

Avoid the trap

At the car,
in about an hour.

No posting your module to a workshop and waiting days without a car. We come to your MINI — home, work or roadside — and repair the original module there.

  1. 01

Confirm the FRM is the cause

MINI symptoms can occasionally point elsewhere — a blown bulb circuit, a switch pack, a separate fault. We diagnose first and quote the repair only on a confirmed root cause.

  2. 02

    Read & rebuild the module

Using specialist programming tools we read the FRM's current state, rebuild the corrupted data and return the module to service — original coding intact, so no dealer programming afterwards.

  3. 03

    Test everything before we leave

Lights both sides, windows and one-touch, indicators, hazards, central locking, codes cleared. The job is not done until it all works.

Symptoms we fix
  • Lights out on one side
  • Windows not working
  • Indicators & hazards failed
  • Central locking erratic
  • Warning lights stuck on

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

Repair, not
replace.

A new FRM from MINI means dealer prices, coding fees and days without the car. Postal repair firms mean stripping the module out yourself and waiting on couriers, twice. We come to you, repair the original module at your door in about an hour, and test everything before we leave. No posting. No stripping the car. No downtime.

The one-sided Cooper. An R56 with a dipped beam or tail light dead on one side, bulbs all good. FRM repaired at the door, both sides back on before we pack up.

The jump-started Countryman. Flat battery on the school run, jump leads on — and now windows, indicators and lights are all dead. The FRM's memory corrupted; we rebuild it at the car and everything returns.

The used-module trap. A second-hand FRM that will not programme — used modules carry the donor car's coding. We repair your original instead, so nothing needs coding at a dealer.

MINI FRM repair, explained.

Do MINIs have the same footwell module problem as BMW?
Yes — generation R55–R61 MINIs (2006–2014) use the same BMW FRM3 footwell module, and it fails the same way: a dip or spike in battery voltage from a jump start, flat battery or battery change corrupts the module's memory and takes out lights, windows and indicators in one go.
One side of my MINI's lights has stopped working — is that the FRM?
Very likely. Lights out on one side with good bulbs is one of the most recognisable MINI FRM symptoms — the module controls each lighting circuit individually, so a fault can drop one side while the other works perfectly. We repair the module at your door and both sides come back.
My MINI's windows stopped after a battery change — why?
The moment of disconnection or reconnection caused a voltage event that corrupted the FRM's stored data. The window motors and switches are almost certainly fine. Rebuilding the module's data restores them — and your one-touch window function — without any new parts.
Can my MINI's footwell module be repaired rather than replaced?
In most cases, yes. We read the corrupted memory, rebuild the data and put your original module back in service with its original coding — so nothing needs programming at a dealer afterwards. Every FRM variant (FRM2, FRM3, FRM3R — high and basis) and every part number is covered.
Which MINIs are covered?
R55 Clubman, R56 Hatch (One, Cooper, Cooper S, JCW), R57 Convertible, R58 Coupé, R59 Roadster, R60 Countryman and R61 Paceman — roughly 2006 to 2014. First-generation R50/R52/R53 MINIs use a different system entirely; if yours is one of those, call us and we will point you the right way.
How long does MINI footwell module repair take?
About an hour on site for most jobs. We come to your home, workplace or the roadside, repair the module at the car and test everything — lights both sides, windows, indicators, locking — before we leave.
How much does MINI footwell module repair cost?
It depends on where you are, so call or WhatsApp with your registration and postcode for a fixed price upfront. It is a fraction of a new module from MINI once dealer coding and recovery are added — and you keep your original module and coding.
