E90 footwell module repair,
for the UK's favourite BMW.

More E9x 3 Series on UK roads than any other BMW — which makes the E90 footwell module one of the most-searched faults there is. Windows, indicators and lights dead after a jump start, flat battery or battery change? That is the FRM — and it does not need replacing. We rebuild the original module at your door, usually in about an hour, coding intact. Saloon, Touring, Coupé or Convertible. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

What E9x owners
call us about.

Four body styles, one module — and the same failure patterns across all of them.

01 / Jump start

The classic
post-jump wipeout.

Jump leads on a tired battery, engine fires — windows, indicators and lights all die together. The E9x signature: several systems failing at the same second is corruption, not coincidence.

Most common
02 / AHL errors

Adaptive headlight
error on the dash.

Xenon cars throw "adaptive headlight malfunction" warnings when the FRM corrupts — often alongside the window fault. Usually the module, not the expensive headlights themselves. We confirm before anything is replaced.

Xenon cars
03 / Windows

Four windows,
dead together.

All four at once, one-touch gone, straight after a battery event. Regulators and switches fine — configuration lost. Rebuilt at the car.

After battery events
04 / Touring loom

E91 tailgate
wiring shorts.

Touring-specific: the tailgate loom flexes every time the boot opens, wires chafe and short, and the FRM shuts the rear light circuits down. We repair the loom cause and reset the module — or it just returns.

E91 speciality
05 / Warnings

Bulb warnings
that will not clear.

Phantom bulb-failure and general warnings surviving every restart with nothing physically wrong — the module reporting its own corrupt state.

Phantom faults
06 / No comms

FRM missing
from diagnostics.

The severe version: the module drops off the bus entirely. Still usually recoverable at board level on the original module.

Still repairable

At your door,
about an hour.

The E9x is our bread and butter. Same disciplined three steps, whichever body style you drive.

  1. 01

    Confirm it is the FRM

AHL errors and one-side lights can have other causes — a genuine headlight fault, a tailgate loom short. We diagnose first, so you never pay to repair the wrong thing.

  2. 02

Read & rebuild — or fix the cause

Corruption gets read and rebuilt with your original coding. E91 loom shorts get the wiring repaired first, then the module's shut-down state cleared so it stays cleared.

  3. 03

    Test everything before we leave

Four windows, indicators, hazards, every light circuit including adaptive function, locking, codes cleared. Done when it all works.

Which module is in yours?
  • Early E90/E91: FRM / FRM2
  • LCI & later: FRM3
  • E92/E93: mostly FRM3
  • US names (325i/328i/335i): same cars
  • Send the reg — confirmed in minutes

316i to 335d, saloon to convertible, pre-LCI or LCI — same module family, same at-your-door repair.

E90 Saloon (2005–2011)
E91 Touring (2005–2012)
E92 Coupé (2006–2013)
E93 Convertible (2007–2013)

Seen it called a 325i or 328i footwell module online? Same cars, US naming — all covered. F30 3 Series (2012 on) use a different architecture; call us if that's yours. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

The DIY battery swap. New battery fitted on the drive, car now full of warnings with no indicators. The swap was the voltage event. Module rebuilt at the same driveway, coding untouched.

The tailgate classic. Rear lights out one side, garage blamed bulbs twice. Chafed tailgate loom found and repaired, FRM reset — gone for good this time.

The AHL scare. "Adaptive headlight malfunction" and a four-figure headlight quote elsewhere. It was the FRM — rebuilt at the kerb, headlights never touched.

3 Series footwell module, explained.

Does my E90 have a footwell module?
Yes — every E9x 3 Series (E90 saloon, E91 Touring, E92 Coupé, E93 Convertible, roughly 2005–2013) carries an FRM. Early cars run FRM/FRM2, LCI and later cars FRM3. The reg confirms which is fitted before we arrive.
What does the adaptive headlight error mean on my E90?
On xenon-equipped E9x cars, a corrupt FRM commonly throws the "adaptive headlight malfunction" warning — the module drives those circuits. It is usually the module, not the headlights, especially if windows or indicators misbehave too. We confirm which before anything is replaced.
My E91 Touring keeps losing rear lights on one side — FRM?
Partly. The E91's tailgate loom chafes with use, shorts the rear light circuits, and the FRM shuts them down to protect itself. Clearing the module without repairing the loom just brings it back — we fix the wiring cause first, then reset the module properly.
Is a 325i/328i footwell module the same thing?
Yes — 325i, 328i, 330i, 335i are the same E9x cars under US-market names, with the same FRM. If your search started on an American forum, everything here applies.
My 3 Series died after a jump start — what now?
Leave the battery alone, skip the used-module gamble, and have the module read. Jump-start corruption is the classic E9x failure and it is rebuilt at your door in about an hour — see our dead-after-a-jump-start guide.
How long does the repair take?
About an hour on site for most jobs, with every circuit — including the adaptive headlight function — tested before we leave.
What does it cost?
One fixed price quoted upfront from your reg and postcode, a fraction of the dealer route. The FRM repair cost page has the honest comparison.
