X1 footwell module repair,
the school-run special.

The E84 X1 lives a short-trip life — school runs and supermarket hops that never quite recharge the battery. So it goes flat, gets jumped or charged, and the FRM3 corrupts — lights out one side, windows dead, warnings everywhere. We rebuild the original module at your door in about an hour, coding intact. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

2009–2015 X1s carry the FRM3/FRM3R — the variant most famous for voltage-dip corruption.

What E84 owners
call us about.

A newer car than the E87s and E90s — but the same module family, and a lifestyle that flattens batteries.

01 / Short trips

The battery that
never recovers.

Stop-start town miles never fully recharge the battery, it drifts flat, and the recovery — jump or charger — is the voltage event that corrupts the FRM3. The X1 origin story, nine times out of ten.

The X1 pattern
02 / Lights

Lights out
on one side.

Dipped beam or tail light dead one side with good bulbs — the FRM3's signature. The module drives each circuit individually and shuts them down independently.

Signature fault
03 / Windows

Windows dead,
one-touch gone.

All windows quit together after the battery event, one-touch lost. Configuration, not hardware — rebuilt at the car.

After battery events
04 / Battery swaps

New battery,
new problems.

A battery change done without care is itself a voltage event — and owners often discover the FRM fault the same afternoon the new battery goes in. The swap didn't break it; the disconnection did.

The cruel irony
05 / Locking

Locking & mirrors
misbehaving.

Erratic central locking and mirror functions arriving alongside the light and window faults complete the FRM picture.

Same root cause
06 / No comms

Module gone
from diagnostics.

The FRM3 off the bus entirely — usually still recoverable at board level, original coding kept.

Still repairable

At your door,
about an hour.

Driveway, school car park or workplace — the X1 job is the same three steps.

  1. 01

    Confirm it is the FRM3

One-side lights and window faults have look-alikes. We verify the module is the cause before quoting the repair.

  2. 02

    Read & rebuild the module

The E84's FRM3/FRM3R is read and its corrupted data rebuilt on the original board — coding intact, nothing to programme afterwards.

  3. 03

    Test everything before we leave

Lights both sides, all windows, indicators, locking, mirrors, codes cleared — and honest advice on the battery that started it all.

The X1 checklist
  • Short-trip life → flat battery
  • Jump or charge → voltage event
  • FRM3 corrupts → faults in clusters
  • Rebuilt at your door — ~1 hour
  • Battery advice included

sDrive or xDrive, 18i to 28i, 18d to 25d — every E84 carries the same module family.

Got a 2015-on F48 X1? Different architecture (no FRM) — but call us anyway; body-electronics faults on those are also our territory. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

The Monday morning flat. Battery dead at the school gates, a quick jump — and the lights are out one side by lunchtime. FRM3 rebuilt on the driveway that afternoon.

The battery-swap surprise. Fresh battery fitted at home, warnings everywhere by the first drive. The disconnection corrupted the module — rebuilt at the door, swap finally paid off.

The one-sided X1. Tail light out, bulb perfect, MOT looming. Module repaired at the kerb — both sides lit, MOT passed.

X1 footwell module, explained.

Does the BMW X1 have a footwell module?
Yes — every E84 X1 (2009–2015, sDrive and xDrive) carries an FRM3 or FRM3R footwell module controlling the lights, windows, indicators, mirrors and locking. The 2015-on F48 X1 uses a different architecture.
Why did my X1's electrics fail after a flat battery?
The recovery from the flat — jump leads or a charger — caused a voltage event while the FRM3 was writing to its memory, and the data corrupted. It is the most common X1 body-electronics failure and it is fully repairable at your door.
One of my X1's lights is out but the bulb is fine — why?
That is the FRM3's signature: it drives each lighting circuit individually, so a fault takes out one side while the other works perfectly. Fitting bulbs won't fix it; rebuilding the module does.
Did fitting a new battery break my X1?
The battery is fine — the disconnection and reconnection was a voltage event, and the FRM3 corrupted during it. Fitting batteries with proper voltage support avoids this; either way, the module is repairable and your new battery is still a good idea.
Do you repair the X1 at my house?
Yes — home, workplace or roadside, anywhere within roughly 100 miles of Leatherhead. About an hour on site, everything tested before we leave, nothing posted anywhere.
My X1 is a 2016 — is this still you?
The F48 (2015 on) doesn't use an FRM, but body-electronics faults on those are still our territory — call with the reg and symptoms and we'll tell you straight what it needs.
What does it cost?
One fixed price quoted upfront from your reg and postcode — see the FRM repair cost page for how the quote is built.
