X5 & X6 footwell module repair,
for the big SUVs.

The E70 X5 and E71 X6 hide their battery in the boot and offer jump posts under the bonnet — and jump starts done in a hurry at those posts are exactly how their FRMs corrupt. Windows, indicators, adaptive xenons and locking all misbehaving at once? We rebuild the original module at your door in about an hour, coding intact. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

What E70/E71 owners
call us about.

Big cars, big electrical systems — and the same module weakness as their smaller siblings.

01 / Jump posts

The bonnet-post
jump gone wrong.

The battery lives in the boot, so jumps happen at the under-bonnet posts — often rushed, in a car park, with the leads wiggled mid-crank. Every one is a voltage event, and the FRM corrupts mid-write.

The E70 classic
02 / AHL errors

Adaptive headlight
malfunction.

Adaptive xenons are near-universal on these cars, and a corrupt FRM throws AHL errors that look like a four-figure headlight bill. Usually the module — we confirm before anything gets replaced.

Usually not the lights
03 / Windows

Windows & mirrors
dead together.

All four windows and the mirror functions quitting at once after a battery event — configuration lost, rebuilt at the car.

After battery events
04 / Tailgate

Tailgate & locking
misbehaving.

The split tailgate and central locking going erratic alongside the light faults completes the E70 FRM picture.

Same root cause
05 / Winter load

Towing, winters &
tired batteries.

Caravans, winter starts and every accessory running — these cars work their batteries hard, and a struggling battery is one cold morning from the flat-jump-corrupt sequence.

Honest cause
06 / Hybrid

X6 ActiveHybrid
E72 included.

The E72 hybrid shares the body electronics — and its FRM fails the same way. Covered, along with every E70/E71 variant.

Covered too

At your door,
about an hour.

Driveway, office car park or roadside — the SUV job runs the same three steps.

  1. 01

    Confirm it is the FRM

AHL errors especially have other causes on these cars. We diagnose first so you never pay for a module repair the car didn't need — or worse, headlights it didn't need.

  2. 02

    Read & rebuild the module

The FRM is read and its corrupted data rebuilt on the original board, coding intact — no dealer programming afterwards.

  3. 03

    Test everything before we leave

Windows, mirrors, indicators, every light circuit including adaptive function, tailgate behaviour, locking, codes cleared.

Jump an E70 properly
  • Use the under-bonnet posts
  • Solid connections — no wiggling
  • Let voltage settle before cranking
  • Better: charge instead of jumping
  • Already too late? We come to you

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

The holiday flat. Two weeks parked, dead battery, a rushed jump at the posts — and the drive home is full of warnings. FRM rebuilt on the driveway next morning.

The AHL reprieve. "Adaptive headlight malfunction" and a four-figure quote elsewhere. It was the module — rebuilt at the door, headlights untouched.

X5 & X6 footwell module, explained.

Do the X5 and X6 have a footwell module?
Yes — the E70 X5 (2006–2013), E71 X6 (2008–2014) and E72 X6 ActiveHybrid all carry an FRM controlling windows, exterior lights, indicators, mirrors and locking. The 2013-on F15/F16 cars use a different architecture.
Why did jump starting my X5 scramble the electrics?
The battery is in the boot, so jumps happen at the under-bonnet posts — and a rushed jump there is a textbook voltage event. The FRM's memory corrupts mid-write and windows, lights and indicators die together. The data is rebuilt at your door in about an hour.
Is my adaptive headlight error the FRM or the headlights?
If it arrived alongside window, indicator or locking faults — almost certainly the FRM, which drives those circuits. We confirm with diagnostics before anything is replaced, because the module repair is a fraction of an adaptive headlight.
How should I jump start an E70 X5 safely?
Use the under-bonnet jump posts with solid, correct connections, don't wiggle leads mid-crank, and let the voltage settle before starting. Better still, charge the battery instead of jumping where you can. No method is risk-free on these cars — tidy technique just improves the odds.
Is the X6 ActiveHybrid covered?
Yes — the E72 shares the body electronics and its FRM fails and repairs the same way.
How long does the repair take?
About an hour at your door for most jobs, with every circuit — adaptive lights included — tested before we leave.
What does it cost?
One fixed price quoted upfront from your reg and postcode. See the FRM repair cost page for the honest comparison with the dealer route.
