Dead 500 dash display?
Fixed in Tonbridge.

The 500's centre display is a consumable — heat kills the glass, never the cluster. We drive to Tonbridge, lift the failed LCD out of your original unit and seat a new one, kerbside, in about an hour. Odometer memory untouched.

What the 500 does
when the screen goes.

01 / Creep

Fainter every month.

Still readable — just less than last summer. Bond degradation is one-directional. Swapping the screen at this stage is the same job at the same price, minus the weeks of squinting.

Fix it early
02 / Heat

Dies warm, returns cold.

Works first thing, gone by the school run, back the next morning. Thermal expansion is breaking the contact — the endgame is a screen that doesn't come back.

Tell-tale sign
03 / Segments

Digits half-missing.

Eights read as sixes, the trip looks like code. Individual segment lines have dropped off the glass. The stored numbers are fine; the display of them isn't.

Progressive
04 / Backlight

Glow but no digits.

The panel lights up; nothing is written on it. The backlight outlives the glass — proof the fault is the LCD itself, not power or wiring.

Diagnostic clue

New glass.
Nothing else changes.

We're in and out of Tonbridge on the A21 regularly, and the TN9, TN10 and TN11 postcodes produce a steady stream of the same call: 500 driving fine, display dying. That's not coincidence — the screen's ribbon bond is the one part of this cluster with a shelf life.

We don't exchange units and we never post anything. Your cluster stays with your car: we open it, remove the dead glass, fit the replacement screen and rebuild it on the spot. Because the board — and the odometer memory on it — never changes, the car treats the cluster as what it is: the same one it left the factory with.

A dealer can only sell the fix they stock: an entire cluster, ordered in, fitted and aligned — with the calendar doing the real damage, since the wait for parts and a slot is commonly measured in weeks. Replacing just the screen costs a fraction of that and happens the day we park outside your door in Tonbridge.

Screen work is one lane of what the van carries — cluster repair for all makes, diagnostics and component coding ride along on every Tonbridge visit.

Fiat 500 screens in Tonbridge,
answered.

How long does a Fiat 500 screen swap take at my address?
Around an hour kerbside for the standard segment-display cluster. The unit comes out through the instrument binnacle, the screen is swapped on the bench in the van, and everything is refitted and tested with the ignition live before we leave Tonbridge.
Which models get this fault?
The 2007-onwards 500 and 500C across all trims, plus Abarth 500, 595 and 695 — one cluster family, one shared weakness. Later cars with the colour TFT dash are a different display, and we handle those too: confirm by reg when you book.
Mine only fails when the cabin warms up — worth doing now?
Yes. Temperature-dependent dropout is the classic early stage, and the direction of travel is one way. The repair is identical now or after it dies completely — booking it early just spares you the weeks of guessing your fuel level.
Can you come to my workplace in Tonbridge?
Yes — home, office car park or street, anywhere in TN9, TN10 and TN11. The car needs to sit still for about an hour with safe access to the driver's side. That's the whole site requirement.
What if the screen isn't the real problem?
Then we tell you, before any work. The van carries full diagnostics, so if a 500 turns out to have a supply, wiring or cluster-board fault instead, you get an honest answer and a price for the right fix — not a screen you didn't need.
