No mileage. No fuel. Nothing.
Needles sweep, warning lamps light, and the middle of the dial is black. Total LCD failure — and still nothing wrong with the cluster behind it.
Most commonThe 500's centre display is the one part of its cluster with a shelf life. When it fades, scrambles or dies, we drive to you, fit a new LCD in your original unit and hand the car back reading its true mileage — usually inside the hour.
Needles sweep, warning lamps light, and the middle of the dial is black. Total LCD failure — and still nothing wrong with the cluster behind it.
Most commonContrast drains until the odometer is a rumour. Bright days make it invisible, night makes it barely better. This is the bond between ribbon and glass letting go — it only ever gets worse.
Early stageWorks first thing, gone by the school run, back the next morning. Thermal expansion is breaking the contact — the endgame is a screen that doesn't come back.
Tell-tale signEights read as sixes, the trip looks like code. Individual segment lines have dropped off the glass. The stored numbers are fine; the display of them isn't.
ProgressiveThe display stutters, shadows, or blinks whole sections. Vibration and temperature both trigger it. A failing LCD, announcing itself.
Gets worseThe panel lights up; nothing is written on it. The backlight outlives the glass — proof the fault is the LCD itself, not power or wiring.
Diagnostic clueSpeed and revs still read — they're driven by the working side of the cluster. Fuel level, range, clock, temperature and mileage all lived on the screen you can no longer see.
Why it mattersStill readable — just less than last summer. Bond degradation is one-directional. Swapping the screen at this stage is the same job at the same price, minus the weeks of squinting.
Fix it earlyThe 2007-on 500, 500C and every Abarth 500/595/695 share one instrument cluster family — and one design flaw. The centre LCD's ribbon is bonded directly to the glass, the dashboard cycles from frozen to baking thousands of times, and the bond fatigues. Segments drop. Contrast fades. Then one day the odometer, fuel bars, range, clock and warning text are simply gone, while the needles carry on as if nothing happened.
Fiat's fix is the whole cluster: ordered in, fitted, proxi-aligned, often weeks end to end. Ours is the component that actually failed. We come to you, remove the cluster, lift the dead LCD off the board and seat a new one — the mileage memory, immobiliser pairing and coding never leave the car. About an hour, kerbside, done.
