Guide FRM Location & Removal · BMW & MINI

Where the FRM lives,
and why it can stay there.

Looking for the footwell module? It is in the front footwell, behind the kick-panel trim at the base of the A-pillar — driver's side on UK BMWs, same area on R55–R61 MINIs. Below: how to spot it, what it looks like out of the car, and the honest bit the postal repair firms will not tell you — for an at-your-door repair, you do not need to remove anything.

Where it is,
car by car.

Same module family, same neighbourhood on every car — low in the front footwell, hidden behind trim.

E8x & E9x:
A-pillar base.

Behind the kick-panel trim at the base of the A-pillar in the front footwell — driver's side on UK cars. The trim pops off its clips to reveal the module mounted against the footwell side.

What you are
looking for.

A flat black box about the size of a paperback with two or three wide multi-pin connectors along one edge. The label carries the part number and variant — FRM2, FRM3 or FRM3R. See it opened up in the photos below.

Before you
touch anything.

Ignition off, keys away from the car. Unplugging a live module logs fresh faults — and remember, on these cars battery disconnect/reconnect is itself the voltage event that corrupts FRMs. Already faulty? Leave it be.

Why remove it
at all?

Only postal repair firms need you to strip trim, remove the module and courier it away. We come to the car and repair it in place — which is rather the point.

You don't, with us

Removal, honestly
— and the alternative.

We would rather you did not need this section. But if the module is coming out, do it right.

  1. 01

    Do it safely

Ignition off, keys away, interior light off. Kick-panel trim releases from its clips; the module unbolts and the connectors unlatch. Label the connectors, work gently — brittle clips and pins bend easily.

  2. 02

    Know what it costs you

While the FRM is out the car has no lights, windows, indicators or central locking. If it is going in the post, that is your car dead on the drive for however long the couriers take — both ways.

  3. 03

    Or skip all of it

Call or WhatsApp with your reg and postcode. We come to the car — driveway, workplace or roadside — and repair the module in place, about an hour, everything tested. The trim clips live to fight another day.

Removal reality check
  • Trim clips: brittle when cold
  • Connectors: label before unplugging
  • Car unusable while it is out
  • Couriers: days, both ways
  • Or: we come to it — 1 hour
→ Don't remove it. We come to it.

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

We come to it.

The whole reason this service exists: no trim stripping, no couriers, no days off the road. We repair the FRM at the car in about an hour, coding intact, everything tested before we leave.

The paused DIY. Trim half off, three forum tabs open, nerve gone. We finish at the car — module repaired in place, trim back on with all its clips.

The courier near-miss. Module out, jiffy bag ready — then the maths on days-without-a-car got done. Repaired and refitted at the door instead.

The curious owner. Found the module, read the label, sent us the part number. Quote back in minutes, fixed at the kerb — trim never came off twice.

Location & removal, explained.

Where is the footwell module on a BMW 1 Series or 3 Series?
In the front footwell, behind the kick-panel trim at the base of the A-pillar — the driver's side on UK cars. It is a flat black module with large multi-pin connectors, mounted vertically against the side of the footwell. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact position for your car.
Where is the footwell module on a MINI?
Same idea on R55–R61 MINIs: low in the front footwell behind the kick-panel/side trim. It is the same BMW FRM3 module family, so it looks just like the BMW unit — flat black case, big connectors.
Do I need to remove the footwell module for your repair?
No — that is the point of a mobile service. We come to the car and work on the module there. The only people who need you to strip trim and remove the module yourself are the postal repair firms.
If I do remove it, do I need to disconnect the battery first?
If you must unplug it: ignition off, keys away from the car, and take care — unplugging a live module can log a new pile of faults. Be aware of the irony on these cars: battery disconnection and reconnection is itself the kind of voltage event that corrupts FRMs. If the module is already faulty, our honest advice is to leave everything alone and have it repaired in place.
Does removing the module wipe its coding?
No — the module keeps its coding when unplugged. But the car is not usable while it is out (no lights, windows, indicators or central locking), so do not remove it until you know where it is going and how quickly it is coming back.
What does the FRM look like?
A flat black plastic box roughly the size of a paperback, with two or three wide multi-pin connectors along one edge. The photos on this page show one opened on our bench — the label carries the part number and variant (FRM2, FRM3, FRM3R).
Can I remove mine and send it to you?
We are strictly mobile — we come to the car, which means no removal, no couriers and no days off the road. If the module is already out, we can still come to the car and repair and refit it there.
