Guide FRM Reset · The Honest Version

Footwell module reset,
what it can and can't fix.

Two very different problems get called "needs a reset" — and only one of them actually does. A short-circuit shut-down can be cleared once the short is fixed. Corrupted memory — the classic after-a-jump-start failure — cannot be reset by anyone, with any tool. It has to be read and rebuilt. Here is how to tell which yours is, and what actually works for each.

Quick rule
Short? Reset.
Corrupt? Rebuild. A jump-start failure needs the rebuild — no reset will touch it.

The reset tricks —
and the truth.

Every one of these gets tried on driveways all weekend before we get the call. Here is what each actually does.

01 / Battery pull

Disconnect the battery
overnight?

Does nothing to corrupt data — and reconnection is itself the kind of voltage event that corrupts FRMs in the first place. On a car with an already-faulty module, this gamble can deepen the damage.

Myth — and risky
02 / Fuse pull

Pull the FRM
fuse?

Powers the module down and back up. The corrupt data is exactly where you left it. Ten minutes lost, nothing gained.

Myth
03 / Magic button

The hidden
reset button?

Does not exist. There is no button, pedal dance or key sequence that rebuilds FRM memory — anyone selling one is selling folklore.

Folklore
04 / Real reset

Short-circuit
shut-down clear.

The genuine article: when the FRM shuts a circuit down to protect itself, dealer-level diagnostics can clear the registration — once the short itself is repaired. Fix the cause first or it returns immediately.

Works — cause first
05 / Cheap tools

Budget OBD
readers.

Most cannot address the FRM properly, let alone clear shut-down states. If a £20 reader could fix this fault, the forums would be a lot quieter.

Not up to it
06 / Corruption

After a jump start:
not a reset job.

Voltage events corrupt stored data. No reset — real or mythical — touches corruption; the data is read and rebuilt at board level with programming tools. That is the repair, done at your door.

Needs the rebuild

Diagnose which fault
you really have.

The fix only sticks when it matches the fault. At the car, we establish which of the two problems yours is, then do the right one.

  1. 01

    Identify: short or corruption?

History tells most of it — one circuit down points to a short-circuit shut-down; everything failing after a jump start points to corruption. Diagnostics confirms it in minutes.

  2. 02

Shorts: fix the cause, then clear

A failing bulb, chafed loom or corroded connector gets found and fixed first. Then the shut-down registration is cleared properly — and stays cleared, because the cause is gone.

  3. 03

    Corruption: rebuild the data

The module is read and its data rebuilt on the original board, coding intact, every circuit tested before we leave. About an hour at your door — the job the weekend of battery-pulling was trying to avoid.

Which is yours?
  • One circuit out → likely a short
  • Everything after a jump → corruption
  • Reset returns → cause never fixed
  • No comms on diagnostics → corruption
  • Either way: fixed at your door
→ Right fix, first time

Same two faults,
every FRM car.

Shorts and corruption behave the same on every FRM-equipped BMW and MINI, roughly 2005–2014.

The boomerang reset. A garage cleared the shut-down twice; it came back twice. We found the chafed loom, fixed it, cleared it once — gone for good.

The silent module. A budget OBD tool could not see the FRM at all and the owner feared the worst. Read with proper equipment, data rebuilt, module back on the bus.

FRM resets, explained.

How do I reset my BMW footwell module?
It depends what "reset" means for your fault. If the FRM has shut a circuit down after detecting a short (lights out one side is the classic sign), the shut-down state can be cleared with proper diagnostic equipment — but only once the short itself is fixed, or it returns immediately. If the module's memory has corrupted — the classic after-a-jump-start failure — no reset of any kind will fix it: the data has to be read and rebuilt with programming tools.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the footwell module?
No. FRM corruption is damaged stored data, not a temporary glitch, so power-cycling changes nothing — and on these cars battery disconnection and reconnection is itself a voltage event of exactly the kind that corrupts FRMs. If the module is already faulty, leave the battery alone.
Is there a reset button or fuse-pull trick for the FRM?
No hidden button exists, and pulling fuses only powers the module down — the corrupt data is still there when power returns. The forums are full of owners who spent a weekend on these tricks before having the data rebuilt in an hour.
Can a cheap OBD code reader reset the FRM?
Generally no. Budget readers often cannot address the FRM properly, let alone clear short-circuit registrations or touch stored data. Proper capability needs dealer-level diagnostics — which is part of what we bring to the car.
The lights came back after a reset but failed again — why?
Because the underlying cause was never fixed. A cleared short-circuit shut-down returns as soon as the FRM sees the same short again — a failing bulb, chafed wiring or a corroded connector. We find and fix the cause, then clear the state so it stays cleared.
My car was jump-started — do I need a reset or a repair?
A repair. Jump starts, flat batteries and battery changes corrupt the FRM's memory, and corruption cannot be reset by anyone — it is rebuilt with programming tools at board level. That is the at-your-door repair on our BMW FRM and MINI footwell module pages.
What does it cost to have this done properly?
One fixed price at your door, quoted upfront from your reg and postcode — whether the job turns out to be a cause-fix-plus-reset or a full data rebuild. Details on the FRM repair cost page.
