R56 footwell module repair,
for the volume MINI.

The R56 hatch is the MINI everyone owns — and the one whose FRM3 we repair most. Lights out on one side with perfect bulbs, windows dead after a flat battery, indicators sulking: all the same module, all rebuilt at your door in about an hour with your original coding kept. One, Cooper, Cooper D, Cooper S or JCW. More: symptoms checklist · what it costs · dead after a jump start.

What R56 owners
call us about.

Small car, small battery, big personality — and the FRM3's most recognisable failure patterns.

01 / One side

Lights out
on one side.

THE R56 symptom: dipped beam or tail light dark on one side, bulbs perfect. The FRM3 drives each circuit individually — one side drops, the other carries on. Rebuilt at the car, both sides return.

The R56 signature
02 / Small battery

Small battery,
short trips.

Town life never quite recharges the R56's compact battery. It drifts flat, gets jumped — and the voltage dip corrupts the module. The most common origin story we hear.

The usual cause
03 / Windows

Windows dead
after the flat.

Both windows quit together with one-touch lost, straight after the battery event. Configuration, not hardware — rebuilt with the original coding.

After battery events
04 / Indicators

Indicators &
hazards out.

Arriving with the window fault, because both live in the FRM3. Relays and switches are innocent.

Pairs with windows
05 / Used modules

The eBay FRM
that won't code.

R56 FRMs are cheap online and rarely programme to another car — donor coding blocks them. Repairing your original skips the gamble entirely.

Avoid the trap
06 / No comms

Module gone
from diagnostics.

The FRM3 off the bus after a jump — still usually recoverable at board level on the original module.

Still repairable

At your door,
about an hour.

Driveway, street parking or workplace — the R56 job is quick and the checklist is thorough.

  1. 01

    Confirm it is the FRM3

One-side lights especially get blamed on bulbs and loom faults. We verify the module is the cause — and if it is genuinely a wiring short, we fix that first so the fault doesn't return.

  2. 02

    Read & rebuild the module

The R56's FRM3 is read and its corrupted data rebuilt on the original board — original coding kept, nothing to programme.

  3. 03

    Test everything before we leave

Lights both sides, both windows and one-touch, indicators, hazards, locking, codes cleared.

R56 reality check
  • One-side lights = FRM3 signature
  • Bulbs won't fix a module fault
  • Used FRMs rarely code
  • Original module: rebuilt in ~1 hour
  • JCW to One — all the same fix

Real modules,
real board-level work.

This is what the job actually looks like — FRM boards opened, read and repaired at component level, not swapped for a costly new unit. These photos are from our own bench.

The bargain that wasn't. A £40 used FRM that refused to code. Original module rebuilt instead — the way the job should have started.

MINI R56 footwell module, explained.

Does the MINI R56 have a footwell module?
Yes — every R56 hatch (2006–2013, One to JCW) carries a BMW-family FRM3 footwell module controlling the lights, windows, indicators and locking. Its siblings R55, R57, R58, R59, R60 and R61 carry the same module.
Why is one side of my R56's lights out when the bulbs are fine?
Because the FRM3 drives each lighting circuit individually — a module fault or a registered short drops one side while the other works. It is the most recognisable R56 symptom there is, and bulb-swapping cannot fix it. Rebuilding or resetting the module — after fixing any genuine short — does.
My R56's windows stopped after a flat battery — is that the same module?
Yes. The recovery from the flat was a voltage event, the FRM3's memory corrupted, and windows and indicators usually go down together. The data is rebuilt at your door in about an hour with your original coding.
Is a used FRM off eBay a sensible fix for an R56?
Rarely. Used FRMs carry the donor car's coding and usually will not programme across. Owners buy one, fail to code it, then repair the original anyway — skip to the last step and save the detour.
Which years and models does this cover?
R56 hatch 2006–2013 — One, Cooper, Cooper D/SD, Cooper S and JCW. Earlier builds carry slightly different FRM variants than later ones; the reg tells us which before we arrive. First-generation R50/R52/R53 use a different system entirely.
How long does R56 FRM repair take?
About an hour at your door for most jobs — both light sides, both windows, indicators and locking tested before we leave.
What does it cost?
One fixed price quoted upfront from your reg and postcode — a fraction of a new module plus coding. The FRM repair cost page shows how the quote is built.
