How Ford cluster numbers work
Ford part numbers follow PREFIX-10849-SUFFIX — 10849 is Ford's part-type code for instrument clusters. The prefix ties the unit to a platform and era (and the Visteon-built units often carry a VP prefix on the label too); the suffix tracks spec variants. That's why searching your full number finds a maze of listings — but the prefix alone tells you the family, and the family tells you the fault.

Booked by prefix — Dorking
A caller read '4M5T-10849-FS' off an old invoice. That one prefix told us the exact board and likely fault before we'd started the van. Repaired on his drive in Westcott next morning.
