The fault has a timeline
Across the shared Ford/Visteon cluster family the board fault usually progresses: occasional flicker → episodes of blackout that recover → gauges collapsing on the move → dead cluster and a car that won't start. Where you are on that timeline decides how urgent the repair is. All of it is repairable at your address; earlier is simply calmer.
Symptom by symptom
1. Dash flickers or briefly blacks out, then recovers
The earliest stage — solder joints making and breaking contact with heat and vibration. It will not heal. This is the ideal moment to book a visit: same repair, no stranding.
2. All gauges drop to zero while driving
The cluster has dropped off the CAN network (U1900). The engine may cut out with it. Treat as urgent — pull over safely when it happens and get the cluster repaired before a motorway repeat.
3. Mileage shows dashes (----)
Signature of the Focus Mk1 and Transit Connect cluster: the odometer circuit can't be read. The mileage isn't gone — a board repair restores the true figure.
4. Car won't start, immobiliser light flashing
End-stage. The immobiliser handshake runs through the cluster, so the car sees a theft condition (P1260) and refuses to run. The car cannot be driven to a repairer — which is why our no-start service comes to the car.
5. Centre display faded, corrupted or blank
The Focus Mk3-era and Convers+ signature — an LCD/display-stage fault, repairable without replacing the cluster or losing mileage.
6. Dash flashing on and off
The Transit Mk7 signature, usually ending in total cluster power failure within weeks.
7. No backlight
Common on Mk1-era units — the cluster works but is invisible at night. A board/illumination repair, done at your home.
8. One gauge dead (speedo or fuel), rest fine
Partial board or stepper failure — same family, smaller symptom, same mobile fix.
